Philippine Department of Environment Conducts Training for Local Communities and Fishermen to Protect Dugongs
Officials from the Philippine Department of Environment, along with Link Impact, attended a training session for local communities and fishermen conducting fishing activities in dugong habitats.
The dugong is a herbivorous marine mammal that primarily feeds on seagrass and inhabits shallow coastal waters. Ecologically, it plays a vital role in maintaining the health of seagrass ecosystems and promoting marine biodiversity. However, due to habitat destruction, marine pollution, and fishing activities, dugongs are currently facing an urgent risk of extinction, making protective measures critical.
This training session was organized to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the endangered dugong and to encourage local communities to contribute to ecological preservation efforts.
Fishermen and community members learned about fishing methods that do not disturb dugong habitats and explored ways to protect the marine environment, gaining an understanding of the need to safeguard marine species threatened by climate change and human activity.
